According to Natural England, 91% of adults said spending time outdoors was good for both their physical and mental health. From enjoying a morning coffee on the terrace to finding a spot to catch the winter sun, thoughtful furniture choices can help extend the use of outdoor spaces beyond summer. Swedish outdoor furniture specialist Grythyttan Stålmöbler shares three ways to make outdoor areas more inviting as the seasons change.

Create cosy corners

Creating smaller, comfortable areas can make outdoor spaces feel more intimate during the colder months. Bo Hellberg, CMO at Grythyttan Stålmöbler, recommends combining durable outdoor furniture with softer accessories.

'Creating cosy corners is about adding softness and invitation without fuss,' says Hellberg. 'Layer soft wool throws and weather-resistant cushions on classic steel-framed chairs or benches to bring warmth and comfort.' Furniture arrangements can also encourage people to spend more time outdoors, whether for conversation, relaxation or simply enjoying a quieter moment in the fresh air.

Embrace autumnal hues

Colour can also help outdoor spaces feel more connected to the changing season. Hellberg points to shades including burnt orange, deep green and burgundy as ways of introducing warmth and depth. 'These colours evoke a sense of comfort and create inviting spaces that reflect the natural world outside,' he says.

For 2026, Hellberg notes a move towards bolder colour choices in outdoor settings, including soothing greens, mellow yellows and rustic reds. These tones can work across both urban and rural environments while adding character to outdoor furniture schemes.

Prioritise comfort

Outdoor furniture does not necessarily need extensive soft furnishings to be comfortable. According to Hellberg, the construction and ergonomics of a piece are equally important.

'When constructed with ergonomics in mind and expertly designed to distribute weight evenly across the surface, weather-resistant seating can offer optimal support and comfort tailored to the human body,' he explains.

Choosing well-designed seating can therefore help create an outdoor space that remains functional and comfortable throughout the year. With the right combination of furniture, colour and accessories, terraces, balconies and gardens can become extensions of the home rather than spaces used only during warmer weather.
